Best All Inclusive Resorts in Tulum, Mexico [Your 2022 Guide]

Tulum is becoming a hugely popular beach destination, but how do you select the best resort for you? The 8 best all-inclusive resorts in Tulum are detailed in this post.

Since Tulum doesn’t offer as many all-inclusive resorts as Cancun, many posts will add a la carte hotels so they can tease a more impressive count. There are also many inclusive properties near Tulum but in Playa del Carmen or Cancun. This post exclusively describes the best all-inclusive resorts in Tulum.

When searching for “The Best” of any type of vacation, the best thing to do is find the best for you. The best resort for you will depend on what kind of experience you want. However, most agree that there is a clear winner of THE best all-inclusive resort in Tulum.

Before you jump to the resorts, here’s what you need to know about Tulum.

Where is Tulum?

Tulum is a community in Quintana Roo on the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum used to be the southern end of Riviera Maya, which was, up until 1999, called the “Cancun–Tulum corridor.” Until then, Tulum was a small, quiet town with archeological ruins. Its “hotel zone” has grown to over 70 boutique hotels and restaurants.

Tulum is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Cancun and 40 miles (65 KM) south of Playa del Carmen. That is important to know since traveling to Tulum requires you to fly into Cancun International Airport and arrange for ground transportation to carry you the 1.5-hour drive to Tulum.

This location places you on some of the best stretches of beach in Mexico.

An important thing to know about visiting Tulum is that while some upscale restaurants accept credit cards, most restaurants require cash. Most will accept U.S. dollars, but you should exchange your money for pesos to ensure you get a fair exchange.

What You Need to Know About Tulum

Unlike Cancun, which has dozens of all-inclusive resorts, Tulum has only a few such alternatives. Tulum is a smaller community with smaller hotels, most of which are boutique-style hotels.

These smaller resorts offer fantastic, unique experiences that larger-scale alternatives won’t be able to match. For example, Be Tulum overs a wide variety of rooms, villas, and residences on the beach and in the jungle.

So if you would enjoy the tranquility of a smaller property and immersing in Riviera Maya’s natural beauty, trading an all-inclusive experience for the unique experience of a smaller Tulum hotel may be an excellent idea for you to consider. Tulum hotels will be quieter and at a more affordable price than more popular destinations such as Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta.

Is Traveling to Tulum Safe?

Crime in Tulum has made the news in the past few years. The offenses are from a combination of drug cartels, local corruption, and locals’ resistance to Tulum’s growth as a tourist destination. Robberies and pick-pocketing will be the most significant concerns, but the cartels have a vested interest in protecting tourists.

Potential crime makes it very important to consider the accommodations you select in Tulum. While you’ll find many hotel options in town, you will feel safer (and likely be safer) staying in a resort outside of town.

While COVID is still a concern, you’ll always want to remain aware of current conditions anywhere you plan to travel. So let’s talk about COVID restrictions in Tulum.

What Are the COVID Restrictions for Traveling to Tulum, Mexico?

Neither Mexico nor Tulum currently requires vaccination, quarantine, or testing. Some resorts will require masks in public areas.

These days, you should always travel with face coverings in your carry-on. When traveling for more than a few days, you should also pack face coverings in your checked luggage.

To ensure that you never forget an item, download my Ultimate Carry-On Packing List.

Travelers are currently required to pass a COVID test to enter the United States. You’ll want to make testing part of your vacation planning. Many resorts in Cancun include testing as part of the package. Verify this with your resort, or better yet, your travel advisor.

A travel advisor will also stay up-to-date on travel requirements for you.

When is the Best Time to Go To Tulum?

If you seek lower crowds (and lower prices), the low season is from the end of Spring Break through June, then from September through November. The latter is hurricane season and, thus, a great time to find lighter crowds and lower prices. Remember that, although trip insurance is essential for any travel, it is imperative during hurricane season.

The high season runs from January to Easter. Therefore the peak season includes Spring Break, and this timeframe also coincides with Tulum’s least-rainy season.

During the low/hurricane season, September through November is when Tulum receives the most rainfall.

Clothing Optional Resorts

While none of the clothing-optional properties are all inclusive resorts, Tulum offers several clothing-optional resorts, many offering rooms with a private pool. These resorts allow guests to remain nude in most public and private spaces. You don’t have to go au naturale, but it is an option for you.

My caveat here would be that I doubt most going nude will look like the models in the resorts’ photos.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

While several resorts reside within the biosphere reserve, none are all-inclusive yet. You can visit the biosphere reserve while staying at any all inclusive Tulum resort. However, if you want an experience within the biosphere reserve, you’ll have to forgo an all-inclusive experience.
