Bible Verses About Depression: When Faith Feels Heavy

Some days, faith feels less like soaring through the heavens and more like trying to walk through mud in boots that are too big. It’s exhausting and painful. The mud keeps pulling off your boots. Even worse, you don’t know if you’re getting anywhere, and you can’t see where all this trudging along will take you. For times like these, reading Bible verses on depression might help offer hope.

The Bible Describes the Weight of Sadness

If the silence is deafening, the pain numbing, and the exhaustion…well, exhausting, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It doesn’t mean that you’re more broken than Jacob or me. Although that’s what Job’s friends would have told you. You’re a human and in good Biblical company, with the likes of David, Elijah, and Jeremiah. Sometimes, finding strength in Bible verses about depression can help remind you of God’s presence on your hardest days.

Speaking of Job’s friends, the book of Job reveals that being close to someone suffering is more effective than explaining or fixing. With that in mind, let these Bible verses about depression sit with you like a comforting friend.

If the weight feels heavy right now, don’t feel like you have to force anything. Simply be with the Word by reading scripture and be with the Lord in prayer. Most importantly, reach out for help if your depression feels stronger than sadness or anxiety.

The Books of Wisdom

The Book of Wisdom, Proverbs, reads so positively that it often seems depressing. You think, “Wait, I’m doing all these things. Why isn’t my life blessed and fruitful?” I think that’s why the book of Job precedes Proverbs, to show us first that even a righteous person like Job can endure unimaginable suffering. In times of doubt, Bible verses about depression can provide clarity and connection to others who struggled before us.

Additionally, you can know that you’re not alone. Not only do many of our brothers and sisters suffer from it today, but I’ll remind you of some of the Bible’s most famous figures who suffered from depression.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalms 34:18 NIV

What the Bible Actually Says About Depression

Please remember that depression and temporary sadness aren’t the same. Depression could have more profound causes and require care you won’t find in articles sharing Bible verses about depression online. I know that I needed the help of friends and counselors. Furthermore, while the Bible doesn’t specifically mention depression, it describes the feelings of depression and the lives of Biblical figures who struggled with it.

The Bible Proves That Lament Is Not Weak Faith

Remember that you’re not alone. Paul and Barnabas even told us:

“We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,”

Acts 14:22 NIV

It’s true that knowing this probably won’t ease the pain. I think Luke intended this verse to set expectations that life won’t always be pleasant. Many Bible verses vividly address the realities of depression.

But Does It Have to Be This Hard?

I asked that question over and over when I struggled with depression, so I know you’re probably asking it too. And, as you search for Bible verses that talk about depression, remember to be gentle with yourself.

Even the future King David recognized that suffering wasn’t necessarily caused by weak faith when he wrote that struggles also affect the righteous. He wrote about it while running away from King Saul, who wanted to kill David, despite David’s loyalty and service to him.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.

Psalms 34:17 NIV

In addition to Job and David, the prophet Elijah suffered from dejection and isolation. In 1 Kings 19, he even asked God to take his life.

NOTE: If you’re as down as Elijah was, call for help! Contact a friend, counselor, or pastor in your community. If you don’t know of anyone nearby:

The prophet Jeremiah wasn’t called the “Weeping Prophet” for nothing. He suffered mightily and was miserable, watching his nation destroyed and opposed by the people he fought to help. Additionally, Genesis tells of the struggles of Hagar and how she felt abused and alone. Likewise, 1 Samuel 1 reveals the struggles of Hannah, who endured ridicule and felt like a failure. People are often surprised by how many different Bible verses about depression you can actually find throughout the Old Testament.

The Bible is full of broken people, so we’re in good company there. Those broken people were vital to fulfilling the prophecies of Jesus’ birth. Likewise, we share in the suffering of even the most righteous figures in the Bible. That’s why David said, “The Righteous cry out.” Sometimes, discovering Bible verses about depression in the stories of these figures can be a meaningful comfort.

God’s Presence Before God’s Solutions

The Bible’s shortest verse might be its most comforting.

Jesus wept.

John 11:35 NIV

While it’s true that soon after He wept, Christ Jesus rose Lazarus from the dead. In that moment, though, He revealed the comfort we can feel today. Unlike Job’s friends, Jesus’ first act wasn’t to solve or justify. Instead of explaining the situation, Jesus remained present with Mary and the other mourners. Knowing the pain that He would later endure during crucifixion, He stayed near them and let Himself feel their pain. And it moved Him to tears.

Likewise, allow these Bible verses about depression to be His companionship rather than a solution.

In addition to the Lord’s presence and companionship, remember the mighty hand of God works to protect and support us, not hold us down. He explained in Deuteronomy:

But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery…

Deuteronomy 7:8 NIV

Bible Verses About Depression (Grouped by Need)

When You Feel Overwhelmed

Are there times when you feel like you just can’t keep up, that there’s just too much to do or fix? It was why I searched for these verses and wrote this article. Sit with the verses written by people in the Bible who felt the same way.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalms 34:17-18 NIV

Again, David reminds us that even the righteous suffer just like we do!

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 NIV

As noted earlier, the mighty hand of God works to protect and support. Similarly, the “righteous right hand of God” represents strength and kindness. By contrast, the Left Hand represents Severity or judgment. This distinction speaks to His presence and support in our times of need.

When You Feel Alone

The first few days that Job’s friends sat with him were healing and comforting. Then, they started stalking. The so-called help they tried to offer was what made Job feel most alone. Even though his three best buds were right by his side, Job never felt more alone.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 NIV

Feeling alone doesn’t always mean that nobody’s there. Quite the contrary, feeling alone can mean that nobody understands what you’re going through.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalms 23:4 NIV

It’s also okay to feel that you need a more tangible presence. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a friend, counselor, or pastor. In addition to Bible verses about depression, this verse about friends offers an excellent reminder.

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 NIV

When You Feel Hopeless

Hopelessness may be the worst part of depression. What makes it worse is that the media is full of stories and pundits working to erode your hope, so that you’ll put your hope on their side. Because hope is so essential to faith and joy, many of these Bible verses about depression are just as much about hope and anxiety as they are about depression.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV

The English Standard version says, “under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.” That’s similar to God’s explanation to Job and his friends regarding why people suffer. The might is not right yet.

It may be cold comfort when you need something warmer, but try to have faith that God has a plan. It could be that we don’t understand His plan, and it’s not the proper time yet.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Romans 8:18 NIV

When You Can’t Pray

In my return to faith, I’ve found that I often struggle to pray. Sometimes you just don’t know what to say. In addition to not knowing what to say, if life is already tough enough, you might be afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Take heart, the authors spent many of the Psalms and much of Job simply letting it all out. A great example of that is the entire chapter of Psalm 42.

These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.

Psalms 42:4 NIV

Paul reiterates this in Romans 8 and reminds us that all we need to do is sit and worship. The Holy Spirit gives us words and guides our prayers.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Romans 8:26 NIV

How to Read Scripture When You’re Depressed

Since you searched for these verses, you’re probably in a place where you don’t need a Biblical version of “Don’t Worry Be Happy.”

I still recommend reaching out to a friend, counselor, or pastor as your first step. In addition to that help, though, here are ways to read these Bible verses about depression so that they can be the comforting presence they’re meant to be.

Read Less and Sit Longer

Don’t read through each verse once, then skip to the next one. Read each one over and over and sit with it. allow it to soak in and sit with you.

Let The Bible Verses About Depression Carry You

Try not to force a solution or to expect a bright light to shine down on you from the skies. Listen for that still, small voice of God. Wait for that breath of the Holy Spirit.

Focus on sitting, breathing slowly, and meditating on the Word. As part of that, allow the scripture to carry you. Don’t force it to ride into town in a victory parade.

Repeat Without Pressure

We’re not running a race to finish the verses as quickly as possible. Similarly, it’s a contest to see who can read the most verses. Find one that resonates and stick with it. Read it repeatedly. Focus on each sentence, phrase, and word.

Another thing to try is to turn it into a breathing exercise. When I need to, I’ll often inhale, slowly saying, “Our Father who art in Heaven.” Then I’ll allow a long, slow exhale, saying, “Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

It focuses my attention on praising Him and slows my breathing, which is really calming.

Bible Verses That Offer Encouragement

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 NIV

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 NIV

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV

I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13 NIV

When to Seek Help

Now is the time to seek help! If you struggle with deep depression or depression that’s lasted more than a few days, please reach out to a counselor or pastor. If you’re feeling down lately or having a bad day, reach out to trusted friends and enjoy some time together. In addition to friends, talk with family members.

Since I’m doing much better after my therapy sessions, I maintain daily prayer and scripture reading to maintain my well-being. Yes, Bible verses about depression or anxiety–and everything else–and prayer are excellent tools anytime. Depression clouds our perception, though. Whenever depression gets more severe, extra guidance from professionals is essential.
