Ryan: Hello, and welcome to All things Travel. Wizards and muggles alike love the wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort. Today, Shayne and I share all the details. For planning a most magical Harry Potter experience in central Florida.
Well, Shayne, I know from past episodes when you and I have geeked out about Universal Studios, you and I both absolutely love the wizarding world of Fair Potter. What is it, if you could sum it up about what you love? About this area, this land, this theme park. What is it?
Shayne: Walking down the streets of Diagon Alley and through the streets of Hogsmeade Village is more than any other theme. Park attraction is exactly as though you’re walking through the movie. It puts you in the movie, and it’s so immersive and. It’s just an unreal feeling while you’re there.
Ryan: I, I agree a hundred percent. And I think Diagon Alley more than Hogsmeade. Because when you walk in there, you’re in this bubble and unlike any other, Theme park area. I, we both love Galaxy’s Edge at, at Hollywood Studios. We love parts of Disney, but man, this is a whole other level and.
You know, I’ve told this story before. The first time we walked into Diagon Alley, my wife got teared up because
of how, of how immersive it felt from the very beginning. I mean, one of the things you’re gonna talk about is as you walk into Diagon Alley, you hear the bricks move like you do in the movie, and it’s just you.
They just did it right.
Shayne: Even though. At Galaxy’s Edge, they did a great job of, isolating it. You can’t see any other parks, you can’t see anything else. So as far as you know, you’re on Batuu, even though Disney did a better job of that at Galaxy’s Edge, the Harry Potter experiences at Universal are still a more immersive experience. I think.
Ryan: I agree and it’s interesting that we both brought up Hollywood Studios, because Shayne, and working with clients. It’s not an uncommon question because they hear Hollywood Studios and they hear Universal Studios, and they will ask me when they’re at Disney, now what day am I going to Harry Potter?
And so obviously our disclaimer is when we’re talking about the wizarding world of Harry Potter, we’re talking about Universal or Lando Resort, which has two separate theme parks, universal studios and islands of adventure. And that’s where you’re going to. Find Harry Potter and you can very easily do a split stay with Disney, or you can very easily make Universal Studios its own vacation.
But you know, don’t mix that up from the very beginning. Don’t mix those two things up.
Shayne: Yeah. In fact, Ryan and I, in one of our first few episodes, 5, 6, 7, the episode was titled, Where is the Harry Potter Park? Because we wanted to reiterate then that it’s not a Disney Park,
Ryan: So, hey, one of the things that we’re gonna share today, Shayne has done an awesome job of breaking this whole thing down, whether it’s Universal Studios that we’re gonna talk about today, or Iowans of Adventure that we’re gonna talk about next episode. And so go to the show notes. You maybe want to go to the show notes before you listen to the episode today and download the freebie that Shayne has created.
That’s gonna be your guide, if you will, for the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Make sure you have it downloaded for your next trip and maybe even do so before you listen today.
Shayne: Now, I’m not gonna say that you should call me Dumbledore, but it’s a pretty good guide
Ryan: Most families are confused and overwhelmed when planning a vacation. We work with you to plan a trip perfect for your interests, saving you time, money, and stress.
Shayne: We would love to help you plan your next amazing vacation.
Ryan: Reach out to me at Ryan creating magic vacations.com. That’s R Y A n at Creating Magic Vacations dot.
Shayne: Yeah, the guide. I tried to make it kind of step by step, kind of choose your own adventure, but it depends on how long you’re gonna be there, what your plans are for, if you have. Park to park tickets or single park tickets. It depends on what souvenirs you intend to buy. So the guide is really helpful.
It tells you all the things that you can do and to look out for. as far as planning your day. Ryan and I could help customize it for you so that it really matches what you’re wanting out of your trip to Universal.
Ryan: Yeah, absolutely. So, hey, let. A talk about Universal Studios and Universal Studios. The theme park has Diagon Alley and, and you say in the guide Shayne, that since you, you see Diagon Alley first in the movies, you should visit it first. And I agree. A hundred percent. That’s how my family did it the first time.
And it really helped us immerse ourselves in what we’re gonna do. And so the entrance to Dagon Alley is, It is the red building called Lester Square Station. It’s not marked, so you have to quote, unquote know where you’re going. And I’ve told you this before on the podcast, Shayne. I’ve actually been to Lester Square in in London.
And the record store, the music store, that it’s right by the entrance that I Ali looks darn identical to the music store that is in the real Lester Square. And that’s what, again, one of those things they didn’t have to do. To make that fit, and it’s just really cool.
Shayne: Yeah, it’s an astounding level of detail to even at the entrance, before you even get into the Wizarding, World to start immersing you into the fictional location of this area of the wizarding world.
Ryan: So you can look at this kind of two ways on how to start your day if you’re a resort guest or if you’re not a resort guest.
Shayne: resort guests are gonna have an extra hour to get into the parks, so you’re gonna be able to get to some. So if you are a resort, if you are a resort guest and you can get in there early, then I think it’s a good idea to go get some. Nice shots of green gots bank and diagonally before all the crowds start showing up an hour later.
Ryan: I agree. And if you’re starting your day in Dagon Alley, I would, I would ride the attraction first. That’s me. I we’re an attraction family. I would ride it first for that experience knowing that I, that that’s the, the best time line wise to, to ride it.
Shayne: And even if you have the express pass or the Express Unlimited pass, you still wanna see the entire queue. So getting there early before all the crowds are there, gives you the chance to kind of go through at your pace without waiting in line forever, and still seeing all of the queue that runs through Green Gots Bank.
Ryan: So when you enter Diagon Alley, you have to ha, you have to listen, don’t you?
Shayne: Listen for the bricks moving.
Ryan: The bricks will move. You’ll go around the corner so you won’t be able to see Diagon alley. When you first go in, you’ll go around the corner, you’ll hear the bricks move, and what are you gonna see next? Shayne?
Shayne: You see Diagon only laying out before you with all the shops and stores, just like in the movie, and they’re all kind of crooked and leaning and they’re at the other end of the street.
Ryan: Just stop and take some time. Just take it all in because I guarantee it will immerse you in in a completely different way than you’re expecting.
Shayne: And if you’re a huge fan and you haven’t been in there yet, you’re. You’re gonna get misty. I mean, you’re gonna tear up because it is. It’s that awesome.
Ryan: So the first thing we want to talk about is Escape from Gringotts. Okay. And the queue is fantastic. It’s the attraction that’s in Diagon Alley. So if you’re a, if you’re an attraction person, that’s where you want to go first. Even if you, even if you have trouble with motion which my wife does, but she can ride this ride perfectly fine.
You want to go through the queue to see all of the Easter eggs from the the Harry Potter movie.
Shayne: Yeah, and pay close attention. Take your time because there is so much there.
Ryan: So let’s talk about some of the things that you’re gonna encounter in Diagon Alley. So one of the things is Weasley Wizarding Wheezes. And this is their candy store, their joke store, right from the, from the movies. There’s some awesome souvenirs here.
Shayne: There’s a lot of souvenirs right out of the movies. Things that you, And I’m not gonna spoil it. I don’t think we should tell what all of them are cuz there’s so many things that you’re gonna see. And just try to look around and see as much as you can because there are so many things from the books. And that’s, that’s the other cool thing about this.
It’s not off on the movies. If you’ve read the books and seen the movies, you’re gonna get even more out of it than those that have only seen the movies. Cuz there’s a lot of Easter eggs from the books that aren’t included in the movie as well.
Ryan: So one of the decisions from a souvenir standpoint that you have to decide on Shayne is do you spend the money on a robe? And if you’re gonna go for a robe, you’re gonna go to Madam Malkins robes for all occasions. And talk to us about buying a robe at Diagon Alley.
Shayne: Yeah, so Madam Malkins you, it’s a lot like in the movie where they’ll, they’ll help you size, there’s robes of all four houses throughout the store. There’s a. A mirror that is a lot of fun that you can check yourself out and, and see how the robe fits. These are, these are nice robes. They’re not like the
Ryan: This is not a Halloween costume.
Shayne: Yeah, I mean, this is, I mean, you can wear it for Halloween, of course it makes a great costume, but that’s, it’s not one of those cheap costumes. They’re a really high quality souvenir and if you’re gonna follow up with Ollivander’s Wand Shop, just in case your kid gets picked for the Wand choosing ceremony, the pictures will be a lot cooler if they’re dressed in their robes,
Ryan: Well, and. Madam Malkins also has some costuming from the movies. I know you have in your guide that one of the things there is Hermoine’s gown from the Ule Ball, which obviously is a, a very specific costume from the movies and, it’s just, it’s, the robes are a cool way because the cast members are all dressed up fully as characters.
I mean, they are in. As much as you are. So you know, it helps you and them feel more immersed in the whole thing. But now let’s get to the biggie. Let’s talk about Ollivander’s Wand Shop, because this is a must for everybody who comes and visits Diagon Alley.
Shayne: just like in the movies, there’s shelves just full of wands. They’ve got a little show where they do the wand choosing ceremony. Now, I don’t know if they’ll do this every time, but when we went, we, we wrote, we went through the first time and I noticed that they picked a kid on one end. And so after the ceremony, I said, I told my wife and kid, Hey, let’s go try this again. And we went back, made sure that my kid was standing in that spot, and sure enough, she got picked for the one choosing ceremony.
Ryan: And my daughter got picked too, believe it or not.
Shayne: Coincidence?
Ryan: I think not. I think podcast
Shayne: pause, even better, Now the thing about that, if your kid gets picked, you do kind of have to buy and they are for sale. You don’t give it to you and you do have to buy that interactive
Ryan: Yeah, so, so basically what you’re gonna wanna do at Ollivander’s is you can buy a wand that is basically a prop, or you can spend a little bit more and get a wand that is interactive to use throughout the Harry Potter Lands, Diagon Alley, and, and Hogsmeade. This is not where you want to skimp on souvenirs.
If you have Harry Potter heads in your house, you want to get these wands. Absolutely. They are so much fun to use. You will bring them back on subsequent trips, and I’ll give you a little hint. If you have trouble with your wand, if you have, if the battery’s not working or if the magic just isn’t quite as magical as it used to be, you can bring a, a wand back, even a wand from a past.
And all Anders will fix it up for you.
Shayne: And then for the non interactive wands, Any character in any of the Harry Potter movies, including the later Fantastic Beast movies, They have a wand for each character and they’re all different and unique and it’s a pretty cool thing to collect too. I mean, if you’re gonna collect anything, if I was gonna collect my kid, collects them, if I was gonna collect anything, I think wands would be at the top of the list of things that I might collect.
Ryan: They are very cool. It’s a souvenir unlike anything else. So now let’s talk a little bit about the dark side of Dagon Alley. And that’s Knock Turn Alley. And we know from the movies and the books, this is not a place that you wanna be after Dark. And one of the places you can find there Shayne is Borgan and Bork.
Shayne: Yeah, really cool storage where they have all. The dark magic artifacts and souvenirs you might remember from the movies. It’s where Malfoy goes to work out how to do the trick with the banishing closet so that he can help the, Well, I’m not gonna spoil the movie, but it’s from a pretty pivotal scene from the movies.
And if you are a fan of the Wands, you can get Lucious Malfoy wand at Bogen and Burke. Which includes the whole cane and then the wand with the snake hit at the end of it. And then see, see, and they’re, I don’t think they’re on display. You have to ask for one of those wands if you’re interested in.
Ryan: Very cool. Now, another cool souvenir, which will not cost you as much as the ones is, you can actually do exchange at Gringotts. Gringotts have not in the bank that the ride is in, but they have an outpost office there where you can go in and exchange some money. For souvenir Gringotts’ money that you can use throughout the parks and you can use it beyond the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
But of course it also makes it really cool souvenir to bring home.
Let’s talk about some food options at Diagon Alley. And there’s some good options here for snacks, for food, for drinks. But before that Shayne. I wanna know where in the world.
It’s all things travel.
Shayne: Detroit, Michigan.
Ryan: Detroit, Michigan, welcome to All Things Travel,
Shayne: Did I say it? With a nice southern accident. Detroit
Ryan: Detroit.
Shayne: You know, I’m kind of a music fan, so where do
Ryan: I’ve heard that
Shayne: wanna go in Detroit, Michigan?
Ryan: I think you wanna check out some Motown.
Shayne: Definitely wanna check out the Motown Museum.
Ryan: Very cool. Well Detroit, thank you so much for listening to All Things Travel. We really appreciate it. Do us a favor, reach out to me either on the Facebook group or via email because I’ve got a nice little uh, gift for being featured on today’s show.
Shayne: And to make sure you hear where in the world is All Things Travel next week, be sure to follow the show so that you never miss any of our travel tips, travel ideas, or travel stories.
Ryan: All right, Shayne, So I’m getting hungry, and so I’m gonna be in Diagon Alley. I’m gonna head to the Leaky Cauldron.
Shayne: One of my favorites.
Ryan: So this is a quick surface dining location in Diagon Alley. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is obviously a breakfast menu. Lunch and dinner is the same menu they have.
Fantastic. English esque food. So you can get a full English breakfast here. You can get your Fishman chips, you can get your Plowman’s platter. You can just have a really good time. And the coolest thing is even inside the restaurant, it very much looks like you’re inside the movie.
Shayne: And even though it’s a quick service restaurant, there’s still seating inside where you can enjoy this very magical
Ryan: Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. You can also have your first experience here with Butterbeer, and Butterbeer is a very integral part of visiting the wizarding world of Harry Potter, isn’t it? Shayne.
Shayne: Yes. It comes in a few different options, and this is the Leaky Caldron is a place where you can have a few of those options.
Ryan: so you can get it cold, you can get it frozen or my favorite. You can get it hot. The first time we visited Universal Orlando Resort, Shayne was January, and believe it or not, I was standing in Diagon Alley and I could see my breath. It was that cold. And so that hot butter beer, which tastes like a butter, Scotch hot chocolate, which is not a bad taste, came in handy a lot.
And so this is a, a good place to get it. But you’re gonna find butter beer all over the place in Diagon Alley and in Hogs Mead.
Shayne: And while you’re in the Leaky Caldron, be sure and try the butter beer potted cream. It’s the desert that you definitely wanna get after this meal.
Ryan: Another place to get a refreshing beverage is the Fountain of Fair Fortune, and this is a walkup bar a walkup drink window, if you will, so you can get b, your bottle of Gilly water. You can get beers here. This is a really cool place and a lot of the wand interactions are around this place as well. And Shayne you have a tip when it comes to your Gilly water bottle
Shayne: Yes, that’s right.
You can use this Gilly water bottle and get free refills of water or sparkling water.
Ryan: And then a place you’ve gotta try while you’re here is Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor. This place is awesome. Shayne.
Shayne: so many different kinds of ice creams that you, some that you may have tried before, but a lot that you’re not gonna find anywhere
Ryan: Oh yeah, English Toffee Pudding. Lots of different Harry Potter inspired flavors, but obviously the winner here is
Shayne: The Butterbeer ice cream.
Ryan: Butter beer, ice cream. They’ve got butter beer Sundaes. This is a must. This is a place that you’re really gonna want to go. However, if you haven’t had quite enough sweets, Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop, which is kind of attached to all the other stores that we talked about, you can get your butter Beer fudge.
Shayne: Now this butter beer fudge is extra sweet, so just be prepared. But it, it is still delicious. Definitely worth trium, but super sweet.
Ryan: and this is where you can also get candies inspired by the movies in the book. So you can get your chocolate frog, you can get your
Shayne: Bernie Bots Every Flavored beans, all kinds of hard candies, and a lot. It’s just fun to go and look at all the different kinds of candies in this store.
Ryan: Over by the entrance to Knockturn Alley, there’s a small little shop called the Hopping Pot, and that’s where you can get some snacks, some drinks, and that’s where you can also get some Diagon alley inspired beers and
whiskey.
Shayne: the last time I was there. I begged them to sell me a bottle of the fire whiskey. But you can buy shots of it or glasses of it, but they will not sell you the bottle and it would make such a great souvenir.
Ryan: it really would. and you can also get the beers in other spots. So you can, you can do that anywhere where you can get food you can get those beers as well. so another great place for souvenir Shayne. I don’t know about your kids, but my kids love getting stuffed animals, getting little unique things like that. And the Magical Menagerie is a great place for that.
Shayne: Yeah, all kinds of owls. I think snakes, even Jenny’s pig me puff, if
you want one of those
Ryan: my, my kids have come home with all sorts of interesting, Harry Potter world inspired creatures. It’s really cool. And all of the shops have a nod to the movies and the books. They’re not just stores, they’re set pieces in and of themselves.
Shayne: it’s not just a souvenir shop. It’s set up like a wizarding world store in diagonally in the
Ryan: Yeah. Yeah. So you can really geek out. I mean, if you wanna walk around with your robe and your wand and, and pretend like you’re getting your stuff to head off to Hogwarts that year, or you’re meeting your family for a special meal in Diagon Alley, you can really do that.
Shayne: And the cast members will play along with you. I remember going into the entrance of green God’s bank, my Issa has on her slytherin robe and the, the, the person counting, people letting us in, leans over and in a real snooty voice says to Issa. It’s nice having some pure bloods joining us today, It’s just hilarious.
Ryan: Well, hey, speaking of being entertained, I think one of the coolest parts of Diagon Alley is the car kit. Market stage shows. This is where they have actors come out and put on different shows. This could be singing acts like when, when we were there right after Christmas, the first time, Celestina Warlock
and the, um, and the singing, what, I can’t remember the name of her act, but they came out and they sang all these holiday inspired.
Wizarding World theme songs, and there were actors that came out and did this. This really intricate puppet shows. This is a really cool place, and one of the things I like about a Shayne, is it’s covered. A lot of diagonally is covered, so whether it’s cold or hot or raining, you’re, you’re being taken care of.
They really thought this through with being in central Florida.
Shayne: Now I haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Have you had a chance to see the Three Brothers Show? I guess The Deathly Hollow Show.
Ryan: Yep. The definitely hollow show is a, it’s a puppet show that the actors do, and it is really, really cool.
Shayne: Yeah, I wanna see that sometime.
Ryan: So you can spend a lot of time in Diagon Alley and Shayne. I know your family spends a lot, a lot of time in Diagon Alley.
Shayne: Oh yeah. I have to leave them there so that I can go ride some of the roller coasters and stop in the other areas.
Ryan: I mean, if you are a Harry Potter fan, you can spend a lot of time here. Do, do not feel like you wanna rush through this part. This is also why you want to get a park to park ticket and obviously a multi-day ticket so that you can come back and see different parts head over to the other park, which we’re gonna talk about here in a second on how to do that.
So, really schedule time here to, to do this the right way.
Shayne: And it’s probably more my travel style than some, but I would even say take your time here and really take in Diagon Alley, even if you might miss something from one of the other parks or one of the other parts of the park. If you’re a big Harry Potter fan.
Ryan: So let’s head out of Diagon Alley cuz we’re not done yet with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Are we?
Shayne: We’re not, and this is the one thing where Universal might have not got it right. There’s a couple of things to see here in this area, just outside of Diagon Alley that aren’t in order. There’s a couple things that maybe come from the third book and from the fourth book, and I think that you should enter into Diagon Alley directly first, just so that you can enter into the Wizarding World, just like Harry Potter does in the books and the movie.
Ryan: So outside of Diagon Alley, you’re gonna have the London Waterfront. And so there’s a couple things you wanna see here. Shayne, you wanna see number 12 Grimmauld Place. You wanna see the red phone booth? You wanna see Alfred Gilbert’s Eros Fountain, and the night bus. All of these are, are nods to the books and the movies, correct?
Shayne: the night bus is really cool. Just be sure you look inside of it and be sure you talk with the conductor. I don’t wanna spoil much from it, but make sure that you go have a look and there’s some really cool souvenirs right there. Not, not a, not a wizarding world esque stop.
It’s more of a kiosk, but still some really cool Wizarding World souvenirs right there by the night bus.
Ryan: So let’s talk about number 12 Grimmauld Place. What? What should we be looking for there?
Shayne: Watch the windows. I don’t wanna give too much away,
but just, just gonna say, just make sure you go check it out and go watch the windows.
Ryan: Nice. I like that.
So what’s your tip? Shayne about the red phone booth that’s outside of Diagon Alley.
Shayne: just like in Order of the Phoenix, when Harry and Mr. Weasley are entering the Ministry of Magic through the red phone booth, you can dial the same number they dial in the movie to hear a message from the Ministry of Magic.
Ryan: To end our time with Universal Studios and Diagon Alley, we’re gonna make our way into Kings Cross Station and what are we gonna do?
Shayne: Make sure that you have your camera ready because there is the point where you can stand back and let your kids go through the wall between platforms nine and 10. They can walk through the walls at platform nine and three quarters, just like in the movies.
Ryan: very cool. So, So you need to have your park to park ticket. And don’t worry, Shayne, if you forgot to purchase a park to park ticket, if you want to ride on the Hogwarts Express right there, what will they sell you?
Shayne: Oh, they will sell you a park to park
Ryan: They will sell you a park to park ticket. So if you hadn’t planned on it, and you do want to do this, I mean, again, if you are a Harry Potter fan, you need to see both parts.
And you need to ride Hogwarts Express. And in fact, I would say to really get the full effect, you need to ride Hogwarts Express both ways.
Shayne: I don’t know how many different options there are, but it is, there are multiple shows that you get going back and forth each time and and I’ve seen several times, people an hour or so before the park closes. Buying tickets, buying park to park tickets there at the end of the day so that they can go back to the other park and, and get an extra hour.
I think Universal lately has had closer park hours. I think they don’t stagger ’em like they did few years ago, but at least for one of the days that you’re at Universal, get the park to park tickets so that you can enjoy the Hogwarts Express.
Ryan: So you’re gonna go through King’s Cross and like Shayne said, and you’re gonna see a lot of the nods to the movies. You’re gonna see billboards, you’re gonna see signage that you’ve seen in in the movies. You’re gonna see little Easter eggs all over the place. And at some point you are gonna see your family walk through the bricks.
Platform nine and three quarters, and you are going to walk into the platform and see in front of you the Hogwarts Express.
Shayne: They did a really good job of letting you enter the waiting area so that you can view the train from the front, and it’s, it’s incredible. It’s just like in the movies.
Ryan: And then you board the train. And you have an experience while you’re on the train. There’s a lot of of Harry Potter’s storyline going on. And then you, when you’re off the train Shayne, you’re in Hogsmeade, and not only you’re in Hogsmeade, you’re at a completely different theme park with Islands of Adventure.
And that’s what we’re gonna talk about on the next episode.
Shayne: So much to do in this Wizarding World, we have to split it into two episodes,
Well, we would love to help you plan your next amazing

Coincidence?
Ryan: I think not. I think podcast
